A Comprehensive Study of the Archives of Academician Wu Ziliang’s Letters Through His Study Abroad封面论文
the Nationalist Government of China strictly controlled studying abroad. With the ideal of saving the country through science
Wu Ziliang chose to further his study in the United States in 1943. The relevant letters not only show Wu Ziliang’s foresight in studying abroad to serve the country at the time of national crisis
but also show the difficulty of studying abroad at that time. In order to realize his original ideal
he stayed away from the dirty officialdom
gave up his beloved subject of aviation
and chose to study materials instead. The procedures for his studying abroad were quite complicated
involving the Chinese Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs
the U.S. Consulate in China and other departments. His efforts were greatly supported by his Alma Mater
the State Northwestern Institute of Engineering and other institutions in the overall environment for fight against Japanese aggression. His studying in the United States became a turning point in Wu’s life
which also laid an important foundation for his winning the Two Bombs and One Satellite Award. During his stay in the United States
Wu was in charge of important projects funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. After returning to China
he led and successfully developed the technology of high-concentration uranium
which contributed greatly to the development of the first atomic bomb in China. This study provides important enlightenment for inheriting the tradition of studying abroad and returning to serve the country and the spirit of Two Bombs and One Satellite.
