We describe the purpose of liberal education through collecting and arranging the teaching material and university history material of Tsinghua University from 1920 to 1930. Besides

we summarize the characteristics of literary education

especially Chinese language and literature education in this idea. First of all

this paper discusses the idea of liberal education of Mei Yiqi and other educators

describing how the curriculum provisionis emphasizing both the liberal arts and science is established step by step. Then it analyses three important characteristics of Tsinghua University literature teaching

knowing through ancient and modern times

making a comprehensive study of oriental and western culture and bringing in new literature. At last

it analyses the teaching methods of combining in-class teaching with out of class teaching

combining professional academic and cultivating writing ability and study style of good relationship between teachers and students. Meanwhile

it generally describes the situation of literature associations and journals

and analyses its significance at that time and enlightenment to modern education. Through retrospecting and introspecting Tsinghua University literature education

we try to find resource can be used for nowadays in university literature education.
