Resource Characteristics and Competitive Advantages of Academic Entrepreneurship in American Research Universities: Case Studies of MIT and Stanford University
Resource-based view emphasizes internal organization resources rather than external environment influence on the development of organization strategies. This thesis analyzes the resource base of academic entrepreneurship in MIT and Stanford University from the four aspects of financial
intelligence or human
organizational and material resources. Using competitive advantage analysis framework
the thesis discusses the characteristics of academic entrepreneurship resources in MIT and Stanford University and believes the resources which are valuable
scarce
difficult to imitate and used effectively by the organization are the key to obtaining sustainable competitive advantages of academic entrepreneurship in the two research universities. It is further found that there are three steps to obtain the competitive advantages of academic entrepreneurship in research universities: 1) identifying the resource base and establishing the direction of academic entrepreneurship; 2) assessing resource characteristics and implementing academic entrepreneurship strategy; 3) developing and utilizing resources to establish competitive advantages of academic entrepreneurship.
