Science or Superstition: The Chinese Calendar Controversy in Early Qing Dynasty封面论文
The controversy on the Chinese traditional calendar in the early Qing Dynasty was a dispute in church over whether the Chinese Calendar Annotation was a superstition. This article analyzes the origin
process and ending of the Chinese Calendar Controversy by combing relevant literature and analyzing its causes and effects. The core issues of the Chinese Calendar Controversy are very similar to the Chinese Rites Controversy. The missionaries in this dispute had different understanding and interpretations on Chinese terms such as
jisi
(sacrifice) and so on. They didn't agree with each other on these issues and it was not helpful to resolve the Chinese Rites Controversy. The Chinese Calendar Controversy was a prelude to the Chinese Rites Controversy
and reflected the dilemma when modern Western sciences were being spread in the Ming and the Qing dynasties.
