Funeral ceremony is an important carrier for the expression of filial piety

but the current funeral style in rural areas makes the expression of filial piety deviate from the traditional intent. Through the investigation of the practice of funeral reform in a village in central Shandong Province

this article finds that the expression and understanding of filial piety by villagers in the funeral ceremony field

as an important basis for interaction between them

is the core content of funeral reform. The villagers’ common understanding of filial piety expression in funerals and the community public opinion norms formed on this basis constitute the "small tradition" of maintaining filial piety in local practice. Therefore

the key for the practice of filial piety to "avoid extravagance and focus on the expression of sorrow" lies in redefining the expression of filial piety at the level of the community

and adjusting relevant public opinion norms

so as to establish the funeral norms in harmony with the modern society.
