Review and Reconstruction of Arts and Crafts Discipline

At the end of Qing Dynasty, with the spread of Western learning and the thought of practical application, young students studying in the West and Japan introduced the concept of “Arts and crafts” and its education into China. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the arts and crafts-related majors were established in 1954 in the professional catalogues of national higher education institutions, and in 1983 they were included as secondary subjects in the academic catalogues, and in 2011 the arts and crafts majors reappeared in the latest undergraduate professional catalogues of higher education institutions. From the early 1950s to the present, the disciplines and specializations of arts and crafts have evolved several times, either splitting up or abolishing or changing their names, and these changes are related to the development of national higher arts education as well as to economic and cultural construction. Under the new social background, we should not only actively develop the arts and crafts industry, but also firm up our cultural self-confidence, insist on local culture as the main body, further solve the problems related to the development of arts and crafts disciplines, improve the construction of arts and crafts disciplines, improve the quality of arts and crafts professional teaching and cultivation, and form our own arts and crafts academic and discourse system, so as to respond to the great task of national cultural revival and the material and spiritual culture needs of the people.
