Academic Value of Newspapers and Periodicals in Vernacular Chinese in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China: A Discussion Centering on Colloquial Words
There were a large number of newspapers and periodicals in vernacular Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China
whose language was quite colloquial
whose content was authentic and reliable and whose coverage was large. Therefore these documents are very valuable for academic studies. In lexicology
these newspapers and periodicals in vernacular Chinese provide brand-new linguistic materials for lexical research on the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China
which is helpful to outline the vocabulary system in that period and promote the study of modern Chinese vocabulary and vernacular vocabulary. In lexicography
such newspapers and periodicals supplement large Chinese dictionaries with unrecorded items
missing entries and documentary evidences. In folklore studies
these newspapers and periodicals demonstrate material folk customs in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China
depict the social folk customs and outline the spiritual folk customs in that period. In order to adapt to the trend of literature digitization in the New Era
we should consider establishing a special database of newspapers and periodicals in vernacular Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China to realize the comprehensive integration and sharing of academic resources of newspapers and periodicals in vernacular Chinese.
