Guqin on the Left and Books on the Right, Parks in the Front and Gardens at the Back: Educational and Artistic Legacies of Zhu Changwen, a Scholar in the Northern Song Dynasty增强出版
Zhu Changwen lived from the Qingli period to the Yuanfu period in the Northern Song Dynasty
and was famous for his articles and erudition in the southeast. Later
he was appointed as a doctor of the Imperial College
and went to the capital to teach the
Spring and Autumn Annals
. He made a wide range of friends and wrote a lot.
The Book of Jin·Shu Xi
says: "When out of office solitary like the dragon and when in office mingling like the phoenix". Zhu Changwen's reclusion in the first half of his life seems completely different from his mingling life in the second half
but in fact they are inextricably linked. His
Inkwell Compilation
and
History of Guqin
not only epitomize the theory of calligraphy and the history of Guqin
but also reflects his thought of "art carries the Tao". At the same time
Zhu Changwen not only taught the
Spring and Autumn Annals
in Suzhou and the capital with profound knowledge
but also passed on all the spiritual wealth gained in his full and contradictory life to future generations
