Institutionalized or Non-institutionalized? A Study on Expression of Demands by Chinese Citizens封面论文
our country has experienced rapid economic and social development
and the great transformation has brought about various expressions of various demands. How much individuals prefer to choose more institutionalized ways to express their demands when encountering injustice could reflect the level of government credibility and social governance ability. Thus
researches on expression of demands should focus on how to realize the institutionalization of the expression of demands. Using the data from "2017 Urbanization and New Migration Survey"
this study aims to characterize the logic of individuals' choice of form for expression of demands when they encounter injustice. Analysis shows that: Firstly
due to the multi-dimensional dual structure
there are structural differences in the possibility for individuals to encounter injustice. Secondly
social structure factors
such as income
household registration
migration status
and city of residence are associated with individuals' choice. Thirdly
higher perception of inter-group conflicts and social problems are associated with higher possibility to express demands
especially through non-institutionalized channels. Fourthly
positive evaluation of government effectiveness is associated with higher possibility of institutionalized expression of demands. In conclusion
the background of social transformation should be taken into consideration when trying to improve and perfect the demand expression mechanism in our country. Moreover
eliminating the multi-dimensional dual structure
solving social problems with initiative
improving the demand expression ability of individuals and enhancing the response ability of the government could be effective means to change the form of expression of demands from non-institutionalized ways to institutionalized ways.
